Photo almost certainly taken at same time as this well know photo from 1909: "Polo Grounds, view from Coogan's Bluff" Seen at: Getty Images. Note the windows in the foreground are at a different angle in the two photos. Interesting note: Luna Park sign in center of photo. Size: 8"x5.25". 1915-01-01 Player | 1915 William Wrigley, Jr. Chicago Cubs Owner Paul Thompson Photo of William Wrigley, Jr. just prior to buying into the Chicago Cubs in 1916. By 1921, Wrigley was the principle owner of the Chicago Cubs. Size: 5"x7" Date: according to U.S. Library of Congress photo shown on his Wikipedia page, same photo, [See Details] is from 1915. Stamped: Photo By Paul Thompson. Paul Thompson photographed many of baseball's most well know players and images during the early 1900s. Several of these photos were used to create well-known baseball cards from that time. Bottom left corner is missing. |
1924-04-15 | 1924 Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker from Ty Cobb's personal scrapbook This photo comes from Ty Cobb's personal scrapbook, with letter from Rex Teeslink, Cobb's medical caretaker. Photo was first sold by Heritage Auctions as part of the full scrapbook (see 10th thumb): Scrapbook in Auction. Photo shows Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker talking to an umpire On Opening Day 1924, Detroit wins. Size: 9.5"x7.5". 1925-10-08 World Series | 1925 Washington Senators at Pittsburgh Pirates 1925 World Series game at Forbes Field, where games 1, 2, 6 & 7 were played. Game 7 had significant rain, so this was not game 7. Pittsburgh is on the field and the ball is hit to the Shortstop: Glenn Wright as Thirdbaseman Pie Traynor watches. Sam Rice is most likely the batter. This was determined by position of the shadow, which would indicate beginning of the game. Video shows first play from first game, which this was not. 1929-03-09 Game | 1929 Chicago Cubs Rogers Hornsby Photo is from a Chicago Cubs pre-season game at Wrigley Field in LA. Tagline is missing, but a very simular photo was sold in the RMY Auctions: Lot #386, Ended 11/10/2018. Same angle, undoubtably the same photographer and game. It was stamped: MAR9-1929. The Cubs played an exhibition game against the California Angeles on the 8th and 9th. The game on the 8th was played at their Spring Training facility in Avalon, California (Catalina Island), so photo is most likely from March 9th. This was what would be the beginning of an MVP year for Hornsby in the first year with the Cubs. Size: 10"x8". Date of game: 3/9/1929. Location: Wrigley Field in Los Angeles. 1930-09-22 Stadium World Series | 1930 World Series at Sportsmans Park in St. Louis Aerial view of Sportsmans Park in St. Louis where Games 3, 4 & 5 of the 1930 World Series were played. Philadelphia Athletics would win the World Series, 4 to 2 games. From 1920–1953, Sportsman's Park was the home field of both the St. Louis Browns (now Baltimore Orioles) and the St. Louis Cardinals. It was renamed Busch Stadium in 1953 after the Browns left for Baltimore. The Cardinals continued here until May 8, 1966. Size: 10x8. Game at Sportsmans Park in St. Louis. 1930-10-01 World Series | 1930 Philadelphia Athletics vs. St. Louis Cardinals Jimmie Foxx crossing home in the 2nd inning of Game 1 of the 1930 World Series. This was the first run of the series. Gus Mancuso was the Cardinals catcher and HP Umpire was George Moriarty. Mule Haas was the next batter, so most likey the batter walking towards the plate. 1931-09-30 World Series | 1931 St. Louis Cardinals Paul Derringer is shown on the mound as a Rookie for the St. Louis Cardinals, who would go on to win the World Series. That year he went 18 & 8 as a starting pitcher. The photo has two dates: Sep 30 & Oct 8. Photo was most likely recieved Sep 30 and was used on Oct 8th the day before he started Game 6 of the 1931 World Series, which he would lose to Lefty Groove. Size: 6x8, 1931-09-30. No Tag. 1935-06-21 Stadium | 1935 Comiskey Park Photo of the lower deck at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The stamp on back states Jun 21 of 1935, which this was not take from since only 597 were in the stands that day and 542 the day before, both games against the Boston Braves. 50,000 is written on the back. No record attendance of anywhere near 50,000 was prior to that date for 1935 nor for all of 1934. This was probably taken at the first All-Star game, which was at Comiskey Park on July 6, 1933 where 49,200 were in attendance. Size: 10"x7" Stamped Date: 6/21/1935. |

Lights were installed in 1938, so this photo is from prior to that. It is believed that the white wording was painted on the roof in 1927 and then painted over when the lights went up. About George Burke from Sports Collectors Daily: "George Burke remains one of the most famous and collected baseball photographers. Based out of Chicago, Burke shot some of the iconic images of the days' stars including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx, Dizzy Dean and Joe DiMaggio, was the official photographer for several teams and provided the photos for the Goudey and Play Ball baseball card sets." 1938-09-23 Stadium | 1938 Forbes Field home of Pittsburgh Pirates Aerial/Elevated view of Forbes Field in Pittsburgh (most likely taken from the Cathedral of Learning Building at University of Pittsburgh). Note no lights and the The Pirates were favored to go to the World Series in late-September. They then lost 6 of 7, and were edged out by the Chicago Cubs. Forbes Field hosted four World Series: 1909, '25, '27, '60 and two All Star Games: 1944 & 1959. It was also the location of Babe Ruth's last homerun, his 714th, on May 25, 1935. Size: 9x7.
